When James was looking into opening his own agency he started by identifying areas in other agents which could be improved upon in order to give his clients a unique service which at the time was not available to landlords. It soon became clear that landlords had only two very contrasting types of agents to use, both of which were lacking in their overall service to clients.
The first choice was the large corporate agent or franchise, these types of agents gave good advertising to landlords but due to their huge portfolios and mainly young and badly trained staff particularly at ‘shop floor’ level they offered a level of customer service which left a lot to be desired, their fees would also often be set nationally and not take into account the local marketplace. The second choice was the ‘one man band’ type of agency which would be run, probably from home, have a very small customer base and therefore give good service to clients. Unfortunately these companies are generally under-funded so the advertising would be very poor and the actual chance of attracting the level of tenants needed becomes hit and miss, often resulting in long void periods between tenancies.
